USA Hockey Coaches and Instructors

All USA Ice Hockey Coaches and Coaching Instructors must be registered annually as individual Participants of USA Hockey for the current season (before the start of the season) in order to be eligible to Coach/Instruct in any regular-season activities (practices, clinics, games, tournaments, try-outs, etc.), state, district, regional playoff, national championships or in the USA Hockey Player Development Programs. There will be an annual fee to register the Coaches (Head and Assistants) and Instructors.

Coaches who also play on a USA Hockey registered team are required to only pay this registration fee once per year. Coaches may register as participants online at usahockey.com or through a local Association/Member program (refer to Section I Participant Registration).

Note 1: All USA Hockey Coaching Education Program Instructors and National Player Development Camp Coaches will be exempt from the annual participant registration fee, but must complete the participant registration process.

Note 2: The Head Coach and all Assistant Coaches of each Disabled hockey team must complete the required CEP registration and online age-specific module(s) for each level of play. Those Volunteers or Employees who assist with helping Disabled hockey teams (i.e. interpreters, pushers, on-ice mentors, etc.) must be properly registered with USA Hockey but are not required to attend a CEP clinic and otherwise comply with those rules and regulations.

Note 3: All ice hockey Coaches and Instructors of registered USA Hockey Youth 18 & Under and Below, High School, Girls’/Women’s 19 & Under and Below, and Disabled Hockey programs must properly wear an approved ice hockey helmet during all on-ice sessions, including practices, controlled scrimmages and all Coaching Education Program clinics and/or workshops.

Level 3 Recertification -- Before the End of the Calendar Year

Coaches must complete the Level 3 Recertification by December 31, 2019 in order to be valid for the end of the 2019-20 season.

Any courses completed after January 1st, 2019 will be valid until May 1st, 2020. Once you registered for the 2019-20 season, your certification will updated for that season.

Important Information to read BEFORE registering:

  1. Coaches MUST be current members of USA Hockey to receive USA Hockey certification credit.
  2. You can re-certify your Level 3 certification only twice. Please check the online certification list BEFORE registering for this program. If you have three or more Level 3 certifications listed, you are NOT eligible to complete this program. You will need to attend a Level 4 clinic to update your certification status.
  3. ALL districts require coaches to have current certification prior to January 1 of the current coaching season. The program must be completed by January 1 in order to receive credit for the current season. Programs completed after January 1 will be held until after May 1 for the following season. Don't See A Clinic Near You?

The Coaching clinic season for Levels 1-3 officially runs from September 1 to December 31. Level 4 clinics are typically held from April to August with some districts holding them later in the year. If you don’t see one near you right away, continue to check your local website as clinic instructors add clinics on a weekly, if not daily basis. Most clinics have been held by the end of November or beginning of December. If you do not see one in your area, you may need to travel to a neighboring state to locate a clinic before the end of the calendar year.

Goaltender Coaching

There is now available a Goaltending Coaching On-line module, now available for a $10.00 fee, and it covers the basics in Goaltending Coaching and Development. Completing this module is mandatory prior to entering the Goaltending Coach Program. Goaltenders and goaltender parents would highly benefit from this module as well.

The Goaltending Coach Program is divided into three levels:

Bronze Level High Performance (HP) Goaltending Development Coach Seminar is the first step the goaltending coach development program. These 1-day clinics will cover aspects of goaltending such as practice planning, teaching fundamental saves, foundation skating, puck handling, positioning, recovery and more. Seminars are available to Level 1 certified coaches and upon completion of the clinic coaches will go up one level within the CEP program, excluding to a level 4 or 5. By completing a HP Goaltending Coach Development Seminar a coach will earn his/hers Bronze Level Status.

Silver HP Goaltending Development Coach Symposium is the second level of the goaltending coach development program. Symposiums will consist of 12 hours of on and off ice Goaltending Coach development. During symposiums coaches will learn the details coaching goaltenders ability to read plays, maximize net coverage in all situations, start team break-outs, intermediate and advanced skating techniques and more. During symposiums, coaches will go on the ice multiple times during goaltender development on-ice sessions to obtain hands on practice in coaching goaltenders. Coaches who complete this symposium will go up one level within the CEP program excluding to a level 4 or 5. Coaches who have completed the Bronze Level as well as a 2 day symposium will be awarded Silver Level Goaltending Development Coach status.

Gold Goaltending Development Summit is the highest level of the goaltending coach development program and is held in conjunction with the USA Hockey Level 5 Coaching Symposium. Coaches attending this event will spend over 13 hours of on ice and off ice on goaltending coaching development, covering all aspects of the position and the details of how to teach the concepts and create environments for optimal goaltender development. The conclusion of the summit will feature a peer reviewed coaching exam where coaches will be given the opportunity to coach goalies on the ice, off the ice with the use of video, and communicate with parents and coaches. Coaches who satisfactory complete all tasks during the Goaltending Development Summit within the Level 5 Symposium will receive their Level 5 Coaching Certification as well as be awarded the Gold Level Goaltending Development Coaches.
